Which Tractor Size Best Suits My Needs?

It’s important to match the size of a tractor to your budget, your property, and your performance needs. Choosing the wrong size can be a costly mistake! The following guide will help you determine the tractor size that best suits your situation.

1. Consider Your Property

The features of your land will influence your ideal tractor size.

First, think about the property size. A bigger piece of property will benefit from a bigger tractor, which will be able to quickly travel across long distances. It gets tedious traversing long distances in a slow moving tractor!

Second, think about the property’s obstacles. Some areas contain obstacles that the tractor will need to navigate around, such as moving between trees in an orchard. A smaller and more compact model will be better equipped to handle these obstacles.

2. Consider the Tractor’s Tasks

The goal is to match the tractor’s performance potential to the land maintenance projects. An underperforming model will hamper productivity. An overperforming model will mean you overspent on performance capability that you won’t be utilizing. Aim for the right balance. In general, a larger property will require a larger tractor.

3. Consider the Amount of Weight To Be Lifted

For heavier loads, a bigger tractor with higher PTO horsepower will be needed. For lighter loads, a smaller and more affordable tractor should do the trick.

4. Consider the Attachments

Determine whether you will be using attachments with your tractor and, if so, which ones you want to buy. Smaller tractors may not be compatible with certain attachments – or even any attachments at all.

5. Consider Your Budget

Larger tractors tend to be more expensive. They cost more to manufacture, which increases their asking price.

If you are on a tight budget and want a larger tractor, consider shopping for used models or during the off-season when dealerships offer sales.

6. Understand the Tractor Sizing Process

Tractors can be categorized based upon their engine horsepower, which also relates to their size.

Sub-Compact Tractors:

  • Usually under 25 horsepower.
  • Ideal for light farm work.
  • Most budget-friendly price points.
  • Best equipped for navigating tight spaces.
  • Compatible with a limited number of attachments.

Compact Utility Tractors:

  • Usually 25 to 65 horsepower.
  • Ideal for light and medium farm work.
  • Compatible with a large variety of attachments.

Utility Tractors:

  • Usually 40 to 125 horsepower.
  • Ideal for heavy farm work.
  • Compatible with many different attachments.
